How to choose a network switch for CCTV

How to choose in 4 steps
- Count your cameras and add one or two spare ports for later.
- Pick Fast Ethernet for normal CCTV, or Gigabit for many high-resolution cameras and other IT devices.
- Add up the power of all cameras and keep it below the switch's power budget (65W to 300W).
- Camera far away or in another building? Use Extend mode up to 250 m, or a model with an SFP port for fibre.

What is PoE Watchdog auto-reboot?
PoE Watchdog is a feature built into every NEXELTRON PoE switch. The switch keeps checking each camera on its ports. If a camera hangs and stops responding, the switch cuts power to that one port for a moment and turns it back on, so the camera restarts by itself without a site visit.
Which PoE switch do I need for 4, 8, 16 or 24 CCTV cameras?
Pick a switch with at least as many PoE ports as cameras, and keep one or two spare. NEXELTRON 4-port models give 65W, 8-port models 120W to 150W, 16-port models 250W to 300W and the 24-port model 300W, which covers typical IP cameras with room for IR at night.
Fast Ethernet or Gigabit network switch for CCTV?
For most IP cameras, Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps per port) is enough, because one camera stream uses only a few Mbps. Choose a Gigabit network switch when you run many high-resolution cameras, connect other IT devices, or want headroom for the future. Every NEXELTRON model above 4 ports has Gigabit uplinks to the NVR.
How far can a CCTV camera be from the PoE switch?
Up to about 100 metres works in normal mode, which is the standard Ethernet range. With NEXELTRON Extend mode a camera can be up to 250 metres away at reduced speed, which is still enough for CCTV video. For longer runs or another building, use optical fibre through a model with an SFP port.
What warranty do NEXELTRON products get?
Every NEXELTRON PoE switch and camera rack comes with a 1-year certified warranty. You do not need to fill a card or register anything. Scan the QR sticker on the product or enter its serial number on our warranty page to check status. Faulty units get next-day replacement from local stock in India.
