Fast Ethernet vs Gigabit PoE switch: which one for CCTV?

Fast Ethernet ports run at 100 Mbps. Gigabit ports run at 1000 Mbps. For most CCTV jobs Fast Ethernet is enough and saves money. Gigabit is for heavier traffic.

When Fast Ethernet is enough

A normal 2MP–5MP CCTV camera sends a video stream that needs only a few Mbps, far below the 100 Mbps of a Fast Ethernet port. So for regular home, shop, office and factory CCTV, Fast Ethernet works well.

NEXELTRON Fast Ethernet models: 4FE, 8FE, 16FE + SFP and 24FE + 2 SFP. The 8, 16 and 24 port FE models have Gigabit uplinks, so all camera traffic reaches the NVR at full speed.

When to choose Gigabit

  • 4K or high-bitrate cameras
  • Wi-Fi access points or other office devices on the same switch
  • Networks where you also copy large files or run a server
  • When you want more headroom for the future

NEXELTRON Gigabit models: 4Gb + AI, 4Gb + SFP, 8Gb, 8Gb + SFP, 16Gb and 16Gb + 2 SFP.
